My oldest son, Zack, got his driver's license yesterday. He'll be 17 in July and I held off letting him get his license for as long as I could - mainly due to insurance costs. Understandably, Zack was getting restless and I realized there is no reason (other than my selfish ones) as to why he shouldn't be driving. He's a good kid. He has a 3.6 grade point average, plays high school sports, is involved in the peer leadership group, and has been showing a great deal of responsibility. Two days before Zack was to take his driver's test, he started in about borrowing my truck. The first time he asked me to borrow the truck, I realized that having a teenager without a dedicated car to drive was not going to work. So my husband and I set out to find the perfect car - one that was inexpensive, safe, and in good condition. Did I mention that it had to be a truck? We're one of those families who actually use our trucks as trucks, so a car was not an option. One other thing, it had to have good gas mileage. Well, Zack got his car today - it's a 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. It's got all the features we were looking for (I was happy to find that it's fairly slow!). It's safe, it was reasonably priced, it's in good condition. Gas mileage isn't as great as I wanted, but something's got to give. Anyway, it was a big day for us - it seems like yesterday that we were changing diapers...
